A shortlisted entrant, Spirit of the Forest heads to the Făgăraș Mountains in Romania to see historic, protected forests
In the Făgăraș Mountains of Romania – the highest peaks of the Southern Carpathians – lies one of the wildest forests on the continent, essential to the earth’s ecosystem. For centuries, they have been a sanctuary for bears, birds, wolves, farmers and freedom fighters.
Spirit of the Forest tells the story of their survival.
Dubbed the ‘European Yellowstone’, the Făgăraș Mountains stretch for hundreds of kilometres across Romania. Many call for the mountains – and the forests within them – to be protected more, so that the region can be known as Făgăraș National Park.

Of course, making a national park has its difficulties. A man who has spent his whole life up in the mountains watching his sheep is unlikely to become a tourist guide overnight. But, in showing local communities the benefits that transforming the region could have, it becomes a lot more likely that they come on board. Today, conservationists are still working toward the creation of a new national park in the Făgăraș Mountains.
For one shepherd interviewed in the documentary, the project is a welcome step in the right direction. ‘The impact is positive, there’s no need to be negative,’ he says.
The Făgăraș Mountains have also faced numerous threats from logging. Back in 2005, logging companies were purchasing the land and tearing down vast swathes of trees. To combat this, the mayor decided to bring in an ‘adopt a tree’ scheme with great success. As well as this, schemes such as QR codes affixed to trees –taking users to links where they can learn more about the wonders of nature – all help to foster community and drive home how important these forests are.
While protecting trees is vital, the mountains are also home to a fascinating array of wildlife – from bears to bison. In Spirit of the Forest, clips of animals in their natural habitat show just how vital it is to protect these creatures.
Ultimately, Spirit of the Forest explores themes of resilience, remembrance, and environmental stewardship, shedding light on the critical need to protect endangered ecosystems while also showcasing the rich cultural narratives that these ancient trees hold. Through stunning visuals and storytelling, the film invites audiences to reflect on the importance of conservation, the healing power of nature, and the personal stories interwoven with the land.
