Learn about the world’s biggest challenges and solutions to them at Brunel University
Geography at Brunel draws on expertise from across the University in programmes that truly integrate the physical and social sciences. Our modules draw together research from different perspectives to provide new insights into global change.
A geography degree at Brunel will provide you with opportunities for learning in and beyond the classroom, including through funded fieldwork. Our assessments require you to apply your learning to real world situations, and to present your ideas using different techniques. By the end of your studies at Brunel, you will have developed the skills and knowledge you need to make change in the world, as a citizen and employee.
Geography skills development
Our Geography degrees provide you with many skills that are very marketable to employers. These include different kinds of research skills such as critical thinking research design, collecting qualitative and quantitative data from people and the environment, data analysis, Geographical Information Systems and laboratory work.
You will also develop a wide range of communication skills including written, oral and graphical communication, including report writing, giving presentations and creating effective posters, blogs and podcasts. You’ll become accomplished in synthesising information from different sources and using it to develop a convincing argument. Also, you’ll enhance your interpersonal skills, including participating in and leading group activities, learning to reflect and build on your own strengths and weaknesses as well as skills in independent and self-directed learning.

Geography international opportunities
If you enjoy exploring different cultures and new places as well as meeting new people, our study abroad opportunities will allow you to experience all this whilst giving you skills that are relevant for both your university life and after you graduate.
Brunel has long-standing links both at home and abroad meaning our students can, with our support, take advantage of various international opportunities. If you decide to take up this fantastic opportunity you will further enhance your student experience and will develop a unique insight into the world beyond your degree.
By choosing to study Geography at Brunel you’ll be able to take advantage of a number of study abroad opportunities through our international exchanges at one of several universities we have partnered with. You can go for one term, two terms or a year.
As speaking multiple languages is becoming increasingly invaluable in a competitive global market, we’ll also support and encourage you to begin or improve your skills in a different language which you can study for free on campus.
Geography work placements
Our Geography BSc programmes offer the opportunity to gain professional experience through work placements.
If you opt for a four-year degree with professional placement, you have a choice either to do a single year-long placement or two six-month placements. Our Professional Development Centre will help you identify and apply for suitable opportunities. Through doing a placement, you’ll gain valuable skills for employment, develop networks, build your CV and most students who undertake placements also perform better in their academic work when they return to their campus-based studies.

Careers and your future
Geography graduates are highly employable and on average receive higher salaries than many other graduates, working in a wide range of sectors and roles. You will develop highly marketable skills in, for instance, gathering and presenting data, analysing spatial and numerical data, developing a reasoned argument, critical thinking, assessing moral and ethical issues, teamwork, communication, project management, and problem-solving.
Our third year ‘Leadership for Change’ module develops advanced teamwork and leadership skills through applying your studies to a community-based project. Through the dissertation you’ll practice skills of planning and undertaking research independently.
Geographers enter careers in many areas including local and national government, the environmental sector, international development, leisure and tourism, disaster risk management, communications, transport, planning, research and academia.
