Editor’s Picks BONUS: Tommy Trenchard on treating clubfoot

1 May 2024
< 1 minute

In this bonus edition of The Geographical Podcast, Editor’s Picks, writer Tommy Trenchard shares his experience of writing about clubfoot in Zimbabwe

For journalist Tommy Trenchard, writing about clubfoot was both an inspiring experience, and a frustrating one.

Around the world, there are an estimated 7.8 million people living with untreated clubfoot, with some 200,000 more being born with the condition each year.

A treatment called the Ponseti method can cure the birth defect without the need for expensive surgery. Tommy met young people whose lives were being completely changed, their prospects drastically improved.

However, despite recent improvements in treatment rates, in low- and middle-income countries, 85 per cent of sufferers still don’t have access to proper care.

Geographical associate editor Katie Burton caught up with Tommy to find out more about clubfoot and his experience writing about it for Geographical.
