Government approves UK’s largest power-producing solar farm

800 MW Springwell solar farm given approval – the largest solar project in the UK terms of power generation

This week, the UK government has approved a major new solar power project in the nation, meaning families and businesses will benefit from more clean energy.

The Springwell Solar Farm, located in Lincolnshire, is set to be the largest power-producing solar farm in the UK. According to the developer, it could power more than 180,000 homes a year – the equivalent of half the homes in Lincolnshire.

The decision to build Springwell marks the 25th nationally significant clean energy project to be approved by the Labour government since July 2024. Combined, these projects produce enough clean energy to power the equivalent of more than 12.5 million homes.

Global instability – from the war in Ukraine to conflict in Iran – has exposed the cost of relying on fossil fuel markets that the UK does not control. Solar is one of the cheapest forms of power available to the country and is key to the government’s clean power mission to secure energy stability and lower bills.

‘It is crucial we learn the lessons of the conflict in the Middle East – solar is one of the cheapest forms of power available and is how we get off the rollercoaster of international fossil fuel markets and secure our own energy independence,’ said Energy Minister Michael Shanks.

The approval for Springwell comes six months after the government supported the Tillbridge solar farm, another large facility in Lincolnshire.

As well as plans to build Springwell, the government has streamlined plans to bring ‘plug-in solar’ to the UK, and updated building standards to require solar panels for new homes from 2028.

Clean energy Britain

The UK’s recent sunny spring weather has powered the solar grid to new energy records on two consecutive days this week. Solar farms in England, Wales and Scotland generated 14.1GW of low-carbon electricity at midday on Monday, surpassing the previous high of 14GW in July 2025.

That record was broken a day later when solar power generation climbed to a new high of 14.4 GW on Tuesday afternoon.

But it isn’t just solar energy that powers the nation. Toward the end of last month, wind power climbed to a new high of 23.9GW – beating the previous record of 23.8GW set on 5 December. The electricity generated from this wind power is enough to power 23 million homes.

The UK government have expressed a clear commitment to using green energy in all its forms: by 2030, it has set a target of reaching 95 per cent clean power.
