In this short film, Issy Drake uncovers the fascinating role played by a British bog –and why its existence is pivotal for habitats and animals alike
An ancient wild-land. Developers circling. A community refusing to stand idly by.
Danes Moss is no ordinary patch of green. It is a rare lowland-raised bog, thousands of years old, storing more carbon than a forest, and home to many rare and endangered species.
Now, in the middle of a climate emergency, part of this irreplaceable ecosystem has been branded as ‘wasteland’ and targeted for development. If approved, it will see invaluable peat-covered land destroyed, ancient woodland hacked down, and vulnerable wildlife pushed to the edge of extinction.
Saving Danes Moss brings Danes Moss to life, revealing its fragile beauty, its hidden inhabitants, and the unseen climate work it does for us all, before highlighting the devastation that could unfold. Told through two knowledgeable voices – one rooted in the detailed world of wildlife surveying, the other in the broader story of climate and ecology – it blends environmental facts with emotional truth.
Through powerful imagery, compelling storytelling, and a clear call to action, it challenges the ‘wasteland’ narrative and remind us that some places, once lost, can never be restored.
Because Danes Moss is not empty land. It is priceless.
