Transforming a 100 sq km of the Scottish Highlands
The Alladale Wilderness Reserve, in the Scottish Highlands, has transitioned over twenty years from a sporting estate to a nature reserve focused on rewilding and conservation.
It has involved planting a million native saplings to restore forests and rewetting over one thousand hectares of degraded peatland to lock in carbon and mitigate climate change.
Alladale is actively restoring native wildlife, including the translocation of red squirrels and participation in the Saving Wild Cats initiative, while also promoting eco-tourism through various accommodations and activities such as guided ecological walks and fly-fishing.
The reserve emphasises community engagement through educational programs and discovery days, and strives for sustainability using a micro-hydro system and serving organically grown food to guests. Ultimately, Alladale’s mission is to be a custodian of the land, leaving it in better condition than it was found by fostering a living landscape where people and nature thrive together.
Alladale has been entered into the group category of the 2025 Better World Video Awards. Find out more about how you can enter here. The individual category prize this year is a 7-night stay in Chiang Mai, courtesy of our partner, Aggressor Adventures; while our group winner will receive a £3,000 advertising package with Geographical.
