March 2023
In the March issue of Geographical, we learn more about the devastating crisis faced by communities in South Sudan. Earlier this year, the recently formed nation’s president appealed to more than 2.3 million South Sudanese refugees to return home, promising security and peace for those displaced by conflict. At the same time, extreme flooding has submerged swathes of the troubled country for three years running, displacing thousands more. As aid workers and the people of South Sudan fear they face further devastation, photographer Peter Caton has been documenting the unprecedented human tragedy for Action Against Hunger.
Elsewhere in the magazine, Jules Stewart visits Spain’s capital to report on an ambitious new project to tackle climate change with a giant urban forest; Mark Rowe discovers how melting permafrost is forming thousands of new lakes around the globe; and Davide Mancini, Sara Manisera and Arianna Poletti dive into the murky world of illegal fishing, which is destroying seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean.
