February 2022
Any mention of deep-sea mining tends to alarm the ecologists who study these little-known ecosystems. And yet, the International Seabed Authority is busy drawing up a set of rules that could see such mining take place. In the February issue of Geographical we explore the potential for this new type of mining and and ask whether we should disturb the deep sea before we’ve had time to uncover its secrets. Elsewhere, Tommy Trenchard visits South Africa, where a new wave of poaching has taken off – this time centred on tiny succulent plants. Photographer Bryan Alexander returns to the Arctic to photograph people he first met in the 1970s. And Faizal Farook explores Britain’s diverse ethnic minority communities and their differing relationships with nature.
