GIS skills in mapping and analysing spatial data are increasingly valuable across a wide range of industries, from environmental management to urban planning
Sandor Petroczi, Director and Founder of AccuCities Limited
Degree: Physical Geography BSc and Geographical Information Science MSc at The University of Leicester
I am the Director and Founder of AccuCities Limited, where we create 3D city models for diverse industries. My journey began at The University of Leicester, where I pursued a BSc in Physical Geography and an MSc in Geographical Information Science.
The scientific and technical modules at Leicester ignited my passion for geography. I was particularly drawn to Digital Geography and Remote Sensing, realising my love for maps. One memorable experience was using an old-fashioned stereoscope in class, a precursor to the digital stereo imagery I use today to create 3D Maps.
Fieldwork, including an unforgettable trip to the California Drylands, enriched my understanding of physical processes. My MSc thesis on 3D GIS further cemented my interest in 3D modelling.
My career started with a summer as a photogrammetric surveyor in London, combining my love for 3D modelling and maps. After my MSc, I returned to the same consultancy, built their first GIS database, and became a Product Manager.
Seven years ago, I founded AccuCities to fill a market gap. We’ve since grown, creating detailed 3D models for architects, tech companies, and more. Geography’s multidisciplinary nature has been crucial to my success, and I encourage students to see geography as a gateway to numerous career opportunities.
