Discover the largest fjord system and one of the most remote communities in the world on Secret Atlas’ new East Greenland micro cruise to Scoresby Sund

Few visitors to Greenland make it to Scoresby Sund, home of the world’s largest fjord system and perhaps its most remote community. For nine months of the year, sea ice blocks the only access to much of this frozen landscape. Between August and October, however, travellers can now explore these isolated waterways with Secret Atlas’ new Expedition Micro Cruise.

Scoresby Sund (or Kangertittivaq in Greenlandic) is a network of fjords that covers roughly 38,000 square kilometres of east Greenland. At the mouth of the fjord lies Ittoqqortoormiit, an Inuit village home to just 450 residents and the only permanent settlement in the region. Beyond the colourful houses, the only neighbours are musk oxen, arctic hares, narwhals and the occasional polar bear.

This summer, embark on an unforgettable adventure by joining a small group cruise of east Greenland’s spectacular coast. With only 12 guests onboard, Secret Atlas promises an intimate experience with crowd-free expeditions and flexible itineraries led by world-class expedition leaders, ensuring the best chance of seeing elusive wildlife and towering glaciers. Not only that, from September onwards, travellers to Greenland will also have the best chances of spotting the Northern Lights in over a decade thanks to the ideal conditions created by a peak in solar activity.

Setting sail onboard the MV Vikingfjord, the Secret Atlas Expedition Micro Cruise spends eight days exploring the towering cliffs, basalt columns and sparkling icebergs that rear up from the fjords’ icy depths. As much time as possible will be spent off the ship on daily Zodiac cruises and onshore hikes through untouched wilderness. At the end of the expedition, the ship docks at the small and remote community of Ittoqqortoormiit, on the edge of Northeast Greenland National Park – the world’s largest. Here, traditional Inuit cultures such as hunting, fishing and dog sledding continue to thrive.

Back on board, travellers can enjoy the scenery from the comfort of the ship, which features nine en-suite cabins, an open plan saloon with rear facing windows, and an on-deck hot tub and sauna. A new energy-efficient, emissions-reducing engine makes this the most environmentally-friendly small ship in the polar regions.

Launched in 2019 and run by Explorers for Explorers, Secret Atlas trips are curated for people that want to enjoy the spirit of exploration and be a part of an intimate experience rather than joining an overcrowded commercial cruise. Book your place on the 10-Day East Greenland Explorer Fly & Cruise and spend this summer exploring the vast and little-visited Scoresby Sund with like-minded travellers.
