Geographical February 2024

February 2024

Despite being easily treatable, clubfoot – a common birth defect that affects the muscles and bones in the feet – remains one of the leading causes of disability throughout the developing world. In Zimbabwe, as in many parts of the world, life for the physically disabled can be a living nightmare. In the February issue of Geographical, photojournalist Tommy Trenchard travels to Zimbabwe, where he meets the doctors helping to change the lives of children born with clubfoot.

Also in this month’s issue: Katie Burton looks into the growing use of carbon offsetting schemes, a popular way for companies to claim ‘net zero’ greenhouse gas emissions, to see whether they really work; Jules Stewart reports on efforts to save New York’s migrating birds from building collisions; Bryony Cottam speaks to the researchers behind Disasters Avoided, a new project focused on the positive action being taken to mitigate natural hazards; and photographer Izzy Sasada reveals the struggles of the Indigenous people of Malaysia, who are losing access to their lands.
