GeoEducationPartnerInspirational Teaching. Research with Excellence. Trusted Support. Your Future

The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University is one of the largest and oldest departments of its kind in the UK, celebrating its centenary year in 2017. Nestled in the beautiful surroundings of Mid Wales, bound by the Snowdonia National Park to the north, the Cambrian Mountains to the east and Cardigan Bay in the west, our unique setting is a perfect place to study geography and Earth sciences. We are recognised as an elite place to study Geography, being ranked within the Top 100 Geography Departments in the World (QS University World Ranking 2016).

Inspirational Teaching

Our students are taught by world-renowned and award-winning academics during each year of their degree. We offer degrees in: Geography, Human Geography, Physical Geography, Environmental Earth Science, and Environmental Science. We also offer a Welsh-medium Geography degree (Daearyddiaeth) and are proud to announce our new four-year programmes, which will give our undergraduate students the opportunity broaden and deepen their geographical learning and skills.

Our key themes at undergraduate level include: Quaternary environmental change, glaciology, fluvial processes, remote sensing and GIS, sustainability, urbanisation, rural change, cultural and historical geography, and political studies.

We offer a variety of local and international fieldtrips to contextualise content taught in the classroom throughout our three and four-year programmes. Laboratory classes, computer practicals and seminars are also at the heart of our teaching, providing our students with a range of opportunities to develop their transferable skills.

Research with Excellence

DGES has world-leading researchers in their respective fields. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), DGES was positioned in the top ten of UK Geography departments with regard to its research power, providing a measure of the quality of research, as well as the number of staff undertaking research. Furthermore, 100 per cent of our research was classified as having either outstanding or very considerable impacts in terms of their reach and significance. As our teaching is research-led the case studies, articles and books that we draw on in the classroom are routinely those that have been developed by our own staff.

Throughout your degree we offer each student an opportunity to develop a range of skills that will ensure you are well-prepared for postgraduate study and employment once you graduate. Ultimately, we offer a rare combination of highly quality education alongside a high quality of student life.
