A powerful account of one couple’s struggle to rebuild after catastrophic flooding and the silence that followed
‘Limbo’, created by Erika Lau, is a short mixed-media documentary that captures the experience of a couple rebuilding their lives after an unimaginable flood in 2023 in Derbyshire, UK. Set within a neighbourhood repeatedly affected by flooding, the short film follows their ongoing efforts to restore their home while managing additional challenges, including disability, financial strain, and the lingering effects of past trauma.
As climate change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, Limbo highlights the growing vulnerability of communities facing repeated displacement. The documentary also addresses the lack of adequate institutional support, portraying the frustration and uncertainty of being left in a state of limbo.
At its core, Limbo focuses on resilience, capturing what it means to keep going with a lack of support, and when the future is uncertain. It offers a clear insight into environmental pressures and the impact of social systems on people’s futures.
