How a nearly devasted peat bog has been brought back to life
Artist and filmmaker Juliet Klottrup’s inspiring short film Moss of Many Layers, about the restoration of Bolton Fell, is the latest entry in the MPB Geographical Better World Video Awards Better World.
The film tells the story of how this lowland bog in Cumbria, formed just after the last Ice Age 11,000 years ago, was nearly lost after it had been industrially stripped of its peat.
In 2013 Natural England took over the 381-hectare site just north of Hadrian’s Wall and started its restoration involving the local community. By improving its hydrology, getting rid of invasive vegetation and reintroducing peat-forming mosses, the former wasteland is now a vibrant environment enjoyed by all, from delighted school kids to former peat cutters who had spent their working lives extracting the peat to be sold to garden centres.
