Geographical October 2023

2 October 2023
< 1 minute

October 2023

In the October issue of Geographical, experienced climber and writer Natalie Berry interviews 90-year-old Kanchha Sherpa, the last surviving member of the team that first reached the summit of Everest in 1953, and his grandson, Tenzing Chogyal Sherpa, a glaciologist who’s working to conserve the high Himalaya. She recounts their fears and hopes for the mountain’s future as it faces dramatic climate change and the problems of an ever-growing number of people willing to spend tens of thousands of pounds to scale its heights.

We also hear from Tommy Trenchard, whose visit to Cambodia’s Tonlé Sap lake reveals a host of modern pressures affecting both the ecosystem and the communities that depend on it; Julian Sayarer recounts his epic bike journey across Türkiye; and we welcome Tristan Kennedy, who will be penning Geographical’s new, regular column, Equipment matters, on the kit we need to enjoy our active lives.
