January 2024
Despite all the media attention that the refugee crisis receives, the individuals making the perilous journeys are often forgotten, particularly if they end up returning home. For the January issue of Geographical, photojournalist Jennifer Carlos spent six months in Senegal speaking to the people who had made these journeys, only to run out of money or be forced to return by authorities. As she learns, many now find it a struggle to fit back into their communities, which often treat them as failures.
Also in this month’s issue: Bryony Cottam reports on the difficult job of assessing the risk level at Europe’s largest caldera, where a wave of tremors have local towns on high alert; Mark Rowe looks at the UK’s progress in green energy and discovers a mixed picture; Katie Burton assesses the situation in Tigray, where the forgotten victims of a brutal war continue to face life-threatening abuses; and adventurer Alastair Humphreys gets out his local Ordnance Survey map and decides to spend a year exploring much closer to home.
