The first elephant orphanage which has raised more than 300 young elephants and returned them to the wild

It all began with a single elephant orphan and a bedroom converted into a makeshift elephant stable. But thanks to one woman, Daphne Sheldrick, who developed the pioneering hands-on husbandry needed to raise orphaned infants, more than 300 orphaned elephants have since been given a second chance. The Orphans’ Project is the first and most successful elephant orphan rescue and rehabilitation programme in the world. In the face of relentless poaching and habitat loss, it is giving a family and wild future to orphans, and hope to a species on the brink of extinction.
